Now that the kids are back to school, the temperature is edging downward and the odd leaf is already starting to fall, the reality of summer being over is setting in. With summer vacations behind us, it’s time to think about upcoming events, one of which (Deaf Awareness Week) is just over a week away.
As I posted in early August, the last full week in September (Sept 21-27) has been designated Deaf Awareness Week (known in some circles of the deaf community as the International Week of the Deaf.) It is a time to put a spotlight on the many members of the deaf community, highlight their tremendous contributions and accomplishments, and focus the attention on the issues and challenges facing the deaf.
During this week, many deaf organizations, hold activities on international, national and local levels to celebrate the deaf community and educate the hearing community about deaf-related topics. Readers of this blog are encouraged to check with their local deaf organizations about events in their area.
