With the 21st Summer Deaflympics over (having taken place from September 5-15 in Taipei) the Russian Federation topped the overall medal list with a total of 98 medals, and having more in each category (29 Gold, 41 Silver and 28 Bronze) than any other country. Ranking 2nd was the Ukraine with 67 medals, followed by the China with 38 and Korea with 33 medals. The USA ranked 7th with 10 Gold, 5 Silver and 7 Bronze medals for a total of 22.
A highlight for the USA was the men's basketball team’s extension of its Gold medal streak to 14, culminating in a 90-73 victory over Lithuania. The team has won every Gold medal since basketball was introduced to the Games in 1957. The US team’s effort was led by Robert Haney Jr. who sank a team-leading 30 points. In comparison, the leading scorers for the Lithuanian team (Robertas Puzinas and Janis Skakun) combined for 41 points, which accounted for more the half of the team's total.
