Dogs for the Deaf: Rescuing and Training Dogs to Serve the Deaf

I came across Dogs for the Deaf and found it interesting and worth reading. They’re a nonprofit operating out of Oregon that rescues dogs and trains them to help deaf individuals live more independently.

Their blog tells about success stories where dogs were placed in homes of those who could benefit from hearing. Before placement in the homes, the Hearing Dogs are trained to alert to everyday sounds such as a fire/smoke alarms, telephones, door knocks, doorbells, oven timers and alarm clocks.
Scroll to the bottom and read the section called “Unleashing the possibilities” which explains what they do at Dogs for the Deaf. Dogs are placed not only with deaf, but with in other special needs circumstances, as well. It’s interesting and inspiring.

This Week is Fire Prevention Week; Be Sure You Have a Working Smoke Detector

The week of October 4-10 being designated as Fire Prevention Week (and in fact this has been expanded out, with the entire month of October being called Fire Prevention Month. Don't have a detector? HearMore has a variety of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors available, including many models designed specifically for the deaf and hearing. Among the selection are the Kidde Combo Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Strobe Light for a bright visual alert and the Silent Call Signature Series Smoke Detector with Transmitter that sends a signal to a vibrating receiver worn by the user or a vibrator placed under the pillow or mattress.

Matt Hamill was born deaf, so his grandfather signed him up for the elementary school wrestling team to raise his self-esteem and help him fit in the hearing world.

Hamill, who grew up in Loveland, Ohio, won three NCAA Division III national wrestling championships as a student at RIT. Now he’s a professional fighter in the UFC — Ultimate Fighting Championship.

ASL Number Dice, available at www.HearMore.com, are a great tool to help students of American Sign Language learn the number signs quickly. Each of these dice has 10 sides and depicts a hand signing the ASL numbers 1 to 10. They are white with black images.

Simply replace the dice on your favorite game with ASL Number Dice, or even use them to create new and different games. They’re also a great learning tool to help teachers teach and test students’ knowledge of American Sign Language numbers.

REMINDER: Deaf Awareness Week is Coming Soon!

Now that the kids are back to school, the temperature is edging downward and the odd leaf is already starting to fall, the reality of summer being over is setting in. With summer vacations behind us, it’s time to think about upcoming events, one of which (Deaf Awareness Week) is just over a week away.

As I posted in early August, the last full week in September (Sept 21-27) has been designated Deaf Awareness Week (known in some circles of the deaf community as the International Week of the Deaf.) It is a time to put a spotlight on the many members of the deaf community, highlight their tremendous contributions and accomplishments, and focus the attention on the issues and challenges facing the deaf.
During this week, many deaf organizations, hold activities on international, national and local levels to celebrate the deaf community and educate the hearing community about deaf-related topics. Readers of this blog are encouraged to check with their local deaf organizations about events in their area.

Sign with Kids Helps Children Learn ASL Basics

Once used almost exclusively by the deaf and their family members, ASL is going mainstream. Due to information coming to light in recent years suggesting learning American Sign Language (ASL) at an early age can support the development of all kids, many parents of children as young as pre-schoolers have decided to have their kids learn to sign.

Sign with Kids is a sign language curriculum developed with children in mind, the goal being to have a teacher spend very little time on the "busy work" of preparing lessons. 25 lessons cover topics that kids need for everyday life, plus 5 additional lessons deal with holidays and special occasions. Each lesson comes complete with a cover page, vocabulary words and sentences for beginning and intermediate/advanced level classes, as well as games/activities for practicing new vocabulary and reviewing previous lessons.

Visit www.HearMore.com for more American Sign Language (ASL) materials.

Ted Kennedy Advocated for Rights of Those with Special Needs

With the death of Ted Kennedy, the many Americans with special needs have lost one of their strongest allies in the government. According to his website, Senator Kennedy has authored more than 2,500 bills throughout his career in the United States Senate, of which several hundred have become law and many of which deal with protecting the rights of those with disabilities.

Being in the independent living business, we at HearMore (www.HearMore.com) deal on a daily basis with, and count among our staff, people in the deaf and hearing-impaired communities, who are among those in whom Senator Kennedy took a particular interest.

In his many years of public service, Senator Kennedy was a great advocate for the rights of the members of these communities. Perhaps most notable among his accomplishments was his sponsorship of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Below is information from the Senator’s website describing his involvement in the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the ADA, including a quote from Senator Harkin, co-sponsor of the ADA:

In 1988, Senator Kennedy passed amendments to extend the Fair Housing Act of 1968 to
include people with disabilities and families with children. By expanding the law, the amendments prohibited discrimination towards people with disabilities in the sale or rental of housing and in the terms, facilities and services provided. It also sets certain guidelines for remodeling and necessary modifications to a residence for both the landlord and the tenant.

Senator Kennedy was one of the chief sponsors of the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1990, which ensures that millions of disabled Americans are able to live productive lives free from discrimination in public accommodations and employment. The ADA requires that public facilities accommodate the needs of disabled Americans, and that employers make reasonable accommodations for disabled workers.

Said Harkin, “I was thrilled when I arrived in the Senate to learn that Senator Kennedy ‘one
of the top leaders in the Senate’ shared the same passion. With his help, we were able to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act and began to see real change. The law literally opened doors for people with disabilities, allowing them access to new employment opportunities, access to new places and access to fuller lives. But more importantly, the law began to change how those with disabilities were seen by others. Senator Kennedy has always dedicated his life to helping those who are too often ignored and this is no exception.”

Visit the Disability Rights section of Senator Kennedy’s website for more detailed information about the special-needs related legislation he supported during his decades-long tenure.

Read All About It: ‘Hidden Frustrations’ Tells the Story of a Hard of Hearing Young Student in Her Own Words

The true, autobiographical Hidden Frustrations chronicles Maureen Mann's determined journey as a hard of hearing young student striving to learn in mainstream educational settings. She recounts seemingly innocuous school experiences that managed to strike at her self-esteem, but balances these stories with the powerful influences of her parents and brother, husband and children. With their support, she strengthened her resolve to overcome discouragement she faced and to help others remove similar obstacles.

This book will give parents guidance and hope, helping them understand their child's struggles and triumphs, and affirming how a family's love and support can be an anchor throughout the school years. Educational professionals will gain insight about the influences various sources can have on self-esteem. Maureen's story has a happy ending. She has counseled a number of deaf and hard of hearing public school students with a positive approach that inspires them to reach for their goals. Soft cover book; 174 pages. Item number 956959. PRODUCT NEWS! Radio Keeps Hearing Impaired Informed of Weather Alerts and Hazards

The Midland Public Alert Weather Radio with Strobe continuously monitors the around-the-clock broadcasts transmitted from National Weather Service offices across the country. This network of combined All Hazard National Weather Radio stations is the most immediate source for comprehensive weather and instantaneous emergency information, in advance of television and radio bulletins. The included strobe alerts deaf and hard of hearing users with bright light and the system may also be enhanced for comprehensive alerting by adding an optional vibrator or transmitter. In addition, it functions as an everyday alarm clock with snooze.

When a severe weather or special emergency statement is broadcast, the monitor is automatically activated along with a loud tone, an LED light and an “alert” message on the LCD display. Severe weather alerts include tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, ice/snow storms and other severe weather. Special emergency bulletins include information about Amber Alerts, explosions, fires or hazardous chemical spills.

The weather radio utilizes Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.), which allows you to enter local county codes and eliminate alerts that are not within your programmed Specific Area. For example, if you only want to be informed for alerts within your county, enter only your county code. If you want to be informed about neighboring counties, you can enter those codes as well.

Deaf Advocate Marcella M. Meyer Dies

Marcella M. Meyer, a prominent member of the deaf community who spent nearly half of her life working on deaf rights issues, died on May 26 in Anaheim, CA. She was 84. Meyer, whose own deafness was the result of a case of scarlet fever when she was 6 years old, spent nearly half her life as a deaf rights advocate.

Among her many accomplishments, Meyer helped establish the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness, a deaf rights advocacy group. She lobbied successfully for closed captioning on TV in the 1970’s, and won the right for the deaf to serve jury duty in the 1980’s.

Meyer was also instrumental in establishing a telephone service in California that relayed messages between the hearing and the hearing-impaired, which ultimately led to the development of a nationwide system.

Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week Recognizes Past, Present and Future of Deaf-Blind Community

Few, if any, would argue the fact that Helen Keller, born June 27, 1880 in rural Alabama, is the most well known figure in the history of the deaf-blind community. But all too many people know little about the deaf-blind beyond Helen Keller.

The Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week, scheduled each year to coincide with her birthday, is being celebrated June 21 to 29, 2009. While the weeklong celebration honors Helen’s memory and tremendous contributions, it also serves as a reminder of the thriving deaf-blind community that continues today.

In fact, the goal for this year’s theme - “Deaf-Blindness Didn’t Stop With Helen Keller” - is to change the assumption that Helen Keller is the only recognizable person who is deaf-blind, according to the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC). The intent of this special week is to show the diversity, accomplishments and potential of today’s deaf-blind community.

Learn more about how to participate in the Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week on the HKNC website.

Hard of Hearing Kids in WI to Get Insurance Coverage for Hearing Aids, Cochlear Implants

Governor Jim Doyle of Wisconsin recently signed a bill requiring health insurers to cover hearing aids and cochlear implants for hearing impaired persons under 18 years of age.

“This is an important bill that protects Wisconsin families,” the Governor is quoted as saying in a May 21 press release appearing on his website. “For too long, too many families with deaf children or children with hearing loss have struggled to pay for treatment. Today, we are making sure these families no longer have to choose between putting food on the table or providing effective and proven treatment for their child.”

Every year about 200 babies are born deaf or hard of hearing in Wisconsin, and over half of Wisconsin families do not have insurance that covers any of the cost of hearing aids, according to a survey by the Wisconsin Chapter of Hands.

Follow these links to Read the Full Press Release on Governor Doyle’s website or visit www.HearMore.com to view a range of assistive aids aimed at helping the deaf and hard of hearing live more active, independent lives.

Light On Call Serves as Both a Telephone Alert and Security Device

Light On Call is a simple multi-function device which upon receiving a call turns on your light for the length of time you decide -- anywhere from 3 minutes to 5 hours. This functionality makes it the perfect home security device for any user, and for the deaf and hard of hearing, it serves as an efficient, economical telephone alerting device

As an alert to incoming telephone calls, Light On Call is a great choice for the hearing impaired. Simply adjust the timer to its shortest setting. On the first ring of the phone, the lamp will go on, alerting you to the incoming call. The lamp will automatically turn off in 3 minutes.

Never walk into a dark home again! Light On Call is great as an added measure of security for people who might be arriving home to a house with no lights on. Just call ahead... even from as close as your driveway. Light On Call will detect the incoming call and turn on the connected lamp. Enjoy the secure feeling and peace of mind walking into a lighted home can provide.

Plus, it stays on the job while you’re away! Traditional timers have set time patterns, even if you stagger them. Clever burglars can easily determine your schedule and identify your absence from your home. With Lights On Call, you control exactly when and for how long your light will be turned on, so nobody can predict the pattern or your schedule. And since the light turns on upon the first ring, you are able to hang up and not incur phone charges for your call home.

Light on Call is available at www.HearMore.com. Get for information here.

Hearing Loss Increasing for Baby Boomers

Hearing loss is a growing problem that, while often associated with senior citizens, is increasingly affecting Baby Boomers, according to an article by Dr. Kent Greer and Laura Fahrer of Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio, published at LancasterEagleGazette.com.

Exposure to noise pollution seems to have overtaken age as the leading cause of hearing loss and an estimated 40 percent of hearing-impaired Americans are younger than 65, which makes hearing loss our nation's third-most prevalent chronic health condition, behind only arthritis and high blood pressure.

The authors cited a study by the National Council on Aging noting that untreated hearing loss was associated with quality of life issues such as depression, anxiety, insecurity and irritability. The NCOA study also looked at the benefits of treating hearing loss with amplification. People who treated their hearing loss with hearing aids reported improvements in their relationships, feelings about themselves, self-confidence, independence and overall quality of life.

Ear Gear Protects Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants from Loss, Damage

As summer approaches, people across the country are getting out and about to take advantage of the milder weather. For many this means camping, hiking, fishing and boating, or playing water sports, baseball, softball, tennis, golf and a myriad of other outdoor sports.

But for hearing aid and cochlear implant wearers, this time spent outside comes with a potential risk. Even something as simple as a pick-up baseball game at the local field can cause problems, as dirt and dust may clog the hearing instrument. And in the case of more active or extreme sports and activities, hearing aids and cochlear implants can be dislodged from ears and end up damaged or even lost. But www.HearMore.com offers a solution.

Ear Gear products were designed to protect the delicate electronics of behind-the-ear hearing instruments from sweat, moisture, dust, dirt and shock. The unique nylon/Spandex blend is comfortable to wear and is acoustically transparent, so it won’t interfere with hearing aid performance. Corded models clip to clothing, providing added protection from loss. They’re perfect for children and anyone with an active lifestyle.

Ear Gear comes in assorted colors and styles, including models for hearing aids, hearing aids with FM attachments and cochlear implants. For more information, go to Ear Gear for Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants.

Deaf Woman Serves on Minnesota Jury

A deaf Rochester, MN woman broke new ground for the local courts when she recently served as a juror on a criminal case. Karen Smith is believed to be the first deaf person to sit on a jury in Olmsted County, MN and among a handful to serve on a panel anywhere in the state, according to a story in the Post-Bulletin of Rochester.

When summoned for jury duty in the past, not aware that sign language interpreters were available, Smith always asked to be excused because of her deafness, . When she received a jury notice in March, however, she didn't ask to be excused, but instead simply advised the court she is deaf.

All necessary arrangements were made, and when she arrived for jury selection two interpreters were waiting for her. By all indications the process, although requiring a little extra effort, went very well. The court systems strive to give all citizens the opportunity to serve, and Mrs. Smith was happy to take advantage of that opportunity. Read the full story by Janice Gregorson here.

Sleeptracker Pro: The Watch That May Turn You into a ‘Morning Person’

Are you tired of being jarred awake by the sound of your alarm clock? Do you sometimes wake up feeling like you haven’t slept well, even though you had a full night’s sleep? If you answered “Yes” to either (or both) of these questions, Sleeptracker Pro Vibrating Audible Alarm Watches may be just the thing for you.

Worn like a regular watch, the Sleeptracker Pro tracks your body movements while you are sleeping and continuously looks for your best possible wake times, waking you from a light sleep stage so that you feel refreshed. You set a window of time during which you’d like to wake up, and the alarm wakes you at just the right moment. Imagine waking up feeling more refreshed and ready to start the day!

Available at www.HearMore.com for $179.00, the Sleeptracker Pro Watches come in three styles: the Unisex Sleeptracker Pro, Sleeptracker Pro Elite: Ladies, and Sleeptracker Pro Elite: Men’s.

And since all models are vibrating alarm watches, they’re great for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Historic North Carolina School for the Deaf in Danger of Closing

A North Carolina House Appropriations Subcommittee will this week be weighing closing the North Carolina School for the Deaf as one of the options to achieve cost savings relating to the state's two schools for the deaf and a school for the blind, according to a story in the News Herald of Morganton, NC.

The consolidation of the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton and another in Wilson, and the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh is among the potential outcomes.

Opponents of the closing cite among its arguments the school’s long and rich history, as it was the only state school for the deaf from 1894, when it opened, until 1965. The school has also received around $20 million in upgrades over the last eight years. But the most important reasons for opposition are the potential loss of jobs (the school employs 221 people) and the impact it would have on the deaf community.

A decision on consolidation is expected within about two weeks.

Marlee Matlin Promotes ‘Deafhood’, Focusing on Abilities Rather Than Perceived Disabilities of Deafness

When Marlee Matlin was a young girl, her parents were concerned about the barrier her deafness might prove to be as she went through life. At the same time, however, they encouraged Marlee to become an active part of society, rather than shying away from it.

Since that time the Oscar-winning actress, who came into the public eye with her performance in Children of a Lesser God, has continued to meet life’s challenges head on. Matlin is the author of Nobody's Perfect and Deaf Child Crossing (available at www.HearMore.com) and has remained an inspiration for many people in the deaf community and beyond.

In a piece for www.About.com, Matlin spoke about growing up deaf and her view of deaf culture today, including the concept of Deafhood, which promotes the positive value of deafness rather than treating it as a handicap. Read the full text of her comments.

Wisconsin Set to Require Insurance Companies to Cover Children’s Cochlear Implants

Wisconsin is on the verge of becoming the first state to require private insurance companies to cover the cost of cochlear implants for children with severe hearing problems, according to a recent Associated Press report.

The bill, which passed in the state Legislature in late April, applies to cochlear implants, hearing aids and related treatment for those under the age of 18. Governor Jim Doyle has promised to sign it into law.

Supporters say the bill is important to the families with deaf children who cannot afford to pay for implants that cost $50,000 or more without insurance. They say getting the devices early is critical to help children develop their language skills.

Opponents said the bill would drive up costs for small businesses and employees who are already struggling to afford health care costs.

Several states already require insurance companies to cover some hearing aid costs, but Wisconsin would be the first to extend the mandate to cochlear implants.

Margie and Luke Finish Third in The Amazing Race and Discuss Their Impact the Deaf Community

In the finale of The Amazing Race that aired this past Sunday night, the hearing mother and deaf son team of Margie and Luke finished last among the three remaining teams. The sister/brother team of Tammy and Victor finished first, winning the one million dollar prize, while friends and former cheerleaders Cara and Jaime came in second.

Margie and Luke seemed to be in a good position to win, having reached the final roadblock ahead of the other teams. However, Luke had difficulty completing the task, which involved identifying 11 events from the earlier weeks of the competition represented by images on surfboards and placing them in the correct chronological order. While he struggled, the other teams completed the task and headed for the finish.

Throughout the show, Margie and Luke showed an amazing ability to communicate and presented a formidable opponent to the rest of the teams. As they rode in a taxi towards the finish, Margie told him how proud she was of him, as he expressed his love to her and his appreciation that his mother learned sign language to communicate with him.

In an interview with TV Guide appearing on http://www.tvguide.com/ Luke and his mother discussed their participation in the race, the reaction of the deaf community and their plans for the future.

One thing that seems certain is that they will come away from this experience with overwhelmingly positive memories. By participating in The Amazing Race, Luke also left his mark on the collective memory of the public and demonstrated what the deaf can accomplish.

For those wishing to learn to sign, there are numerous American Sign Language Books, Videos and DVD’s, as well as complete ASL courses available at http://www.hearmore.com/.
